The Testing.com Medical Review Board is made up of experts from the clinical laboratory profession and other health professions. Members of the Medical Review Board have contributed to the development and review of all scientific core content on the website. Other laboratory professionals as well as experts in a particular field have been consulted at times to assist the Medical Review Board in the review of content. Education

Dr. Toni Brayer has practiced Internal Medicine in San Francisco for over 30 years. A trailblazer and physician leader, she was the first woman Chief of Staff at California Pacific Medical Center and President of the San Francisco Medical Society. Dr. Brayer is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and Associate Clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She is immediate past ECO of Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation, overseeing 300 Medical doctors and out patient clinics and surgery centers.

She serves on a number of boards of directors and has received many awards for her volunteer service after the Haiti earthquake, gulf coast hurricane Michael and the Katrina hurricane. Dr. Brayer recently returned from a medical mission in Rwanda. She has been named a “Best Doctor” for many years and was named “One of the most Influential women in business” by the San Francisco Business Times.

A well-known physician leader and speaker, Dr. Brayer and has written extensively about health care issues, medical economics, physician leadership, women’s health and leadership, social justice, public policy ad quality. She continues her medicine practice at The Institute for Health and Healing and is writing and consulting.

Roberta B. Carey, PhD

D(ABMM), CMQ/OE (ASQ)

Education

Dr. Roberta B. Carey is a consultant in clinical microbiology and laboratory quality management. She was the Director of the Laboratory Quality Management Program for the Infectious Diseases Laboratories at the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) and served as their CLIA Laboratory Director until she retired in 2016. She held the position of Branch Chief of Clinical and Environmental Microbiology at the CDC and Acting Director for the Division of Laboratory Systems. Before coming to CDC in 2004, Dr. Carey was the clinical laboratory director at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL; St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, IL; and the Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago. She is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and a Certified Manager of Quality/ Organizational Excellence. She earned her Ph.D. at Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in NYC and did a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical and public health microbiology at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Thomas Kampfrath

Education

Thomas Kampfrath, Ph.D., DABCC, FAACC received his masters in biology and a Ph.D. in physiology from the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. He conducted his graduate research in the field of air pollution at Ohio State University and received his fellowship training in clinical chemistry at the University of Louisville. Afterwards, he served as a clinical chemist at a large county hospital in California, overseeing chemistry, toxicology and special testing departments. Currently, he is a medical officer for a major in-vitro diagnostics company and is responsible for the safety and efficacy of their laboratory testing devices.

Abdel (Adel) Karsou

Lead Clinical Lab Scientist at Corona Regional Medical Center

Education

Adel Karsou is a highly experienced clinical lab scientist. He is licensed by the California Public Health Department to practice clinical lab testing and certified by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) and Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Scientists (CSMLS). He also holds a specialist certification in flow cytometry from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and is a member of the American Association of Blood Bankers (AABB). Karsou has a bachelor of science in laboratory medicine and a master of science in molecular biology from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. A published research author, committed, detail-oriented medical technology professional and R&D scientist, Karsou brings more than 20 years of success conducting multi-faceted research, testing and analysis in high- volume, fast-paced laboratory settings.
